about us

Germany
In 1905 a baby girl was born in Germany whose proud parents named her Emmy. Unbeknownst to them at the time, little Emmy was to play a vital role in the continued success of her parents future business ventures.

When Emmy was still a small child her parents opened up a food store in Frankfurt. Growing up in such an environment nurtured a passion for food preparation and taught her much about the complicated world of retail hospitality. As a young woman, Emmy married Carl Plöger, a businessman from Frankfurt, and together the ambitious couple set forth to continue what Emmy’s parents had started so many years ago.

With Emmy’s food experience in combination with Carl’s commercial knowledge, modest beginnings were transformed into a successful business that was to become the most famous specialty food store in Frankfurt. Since the store’s opening in 1937 and until the age of eighty-five, Emmy remained the “heart of the kitchen.” She discovered early on that the highest quality goods were most sought after and therefore her food philosophy was born:

“Always choose the best quality”

Plöger Delikatessen became known for its homemade delicacies and unique international grocery items. With over sixty fresh salads each day, and a wide selection of quiches, patés, canapés, prepared dishes, soups, cakes, pastries and deserts available to enjoy in house or take home, Plöger Delikatessen became a gathering place for the local community.
Emmy’s son Klaus and his wife Monika together with Emmy worked ambitious and hard, the company continued to prosper.

In 1985, the third generation of Plögers, grandson Frank and his wife Corinna, joined the family owned business. Working together with Emmy as well as Frank’s parents, Klaus and Monika, the Plöger family maintained the company’s original tradition of serving a wide variety of high quality international delicacies.

The retirement of Frank’s parents in combination with changes in the German economy inspired Frank and Corinna to begin pursuing their Canadian dream. After more than two years of careful planning, Frank, Corinna and their two sons moved to “Beautiful British Columbia” in 2009, embarking on the next chapter of Plöger Delikatessen.

Canada

With two big containers of kitchen equipment, the family arrived in Vancouver in the spring. After an 11 months of search for the right location, many modified plans, formalities, and a huge renovation, the new Plöger was set up in the desired area of Kitsilano, opening its doors in March of 2010.
